Illustration for the "Peonza" magazine anniversary

I recently was invited by Javier Sobrino to participate in the conmemorative exhibition for the "Peonza" children´s literature magazine. A piece of text was assigned to each invited illustrator, more or less realted to the figure of the spinning top (peonza).






The exhibition will take place in the Palacete del Embarcadero in Santander from april 2nd to the end of may 2012. The exhibition will also have a catalogue where all images will be included with their respective texts and the technical details of the works.

The text I was assigned is an excerpt from Marcus Aurelius´s "Meditations", probably the less illustrable text I have ever been asked to illustrate. I had no other option that to cheat.


The excerpt (in spanish):


36. ¡No te dejes arrastrar por tu imaginación!  Ayúdalos conforme a tu capacidad y su mérito,
aunque sólo hayan perdido cosas sin importancia. No sigas, no obstante, la mala costumbre de
imaginar que se ha perdido algo. Como el anciano que al partir pedía la peonza a su hijo, sin
olvidar nunca que sólo era una peonza, ¡haz tú lo mismo ahora que te lamentas! ¿Acaso has
olvidado lo que realmente valen esas cosas? «No, pero otros ponen gran empeño en ellas.» ¿Es
eso razón suficiente para dejarte enloquecer?
37. Dices: «Hubo un tiempo en que fui afortunado, siempre y en cualquier lugar.» Pero ser un
hombre afortunado significa que tiene una buena fortuna, y una buena fortuna son las buenas
inclinaciones del alma, los buenos impulsos, las buenas acciones.
